Mishaps and misadventures

In April 1992, just three months before carrying the Olympic torch, the Rafael Verdera was the target of an attack. Unknown assailants set fire to the ship’s hold, putting both the vessel and the crew’s lives in serious danger. Thanks to the swift action of port security and firefighters, everyone survived, and the incident has since become a harrowing but unforgettable anecdote. The perpetrators were never identified.
